The Harvest Initiative staff participates in World Food Prize

Oct. 31, 2008

The Harvest Initiative provides support to the World Food Prize.

The World Food Prize is the foremost international award recognizing the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. This year’s recipients were former Senators Bob Dole and George McGovern for the success of their school-feeding program which has enhanced nutrition and education for millions of the world's poorest children.

The activities of the World Food Prize are reliant upon volunteers for the success of their operation. Our own staff provided assistance while law students at Drake University and were asked by the World Food Prize to be available as special assistants for the week of the World Food Prize events. Mr. Yates assisted in the execution of the overall travel for the week, while Mr. Miller acted as the VIP liaison to Senator McGovern throughout his events during the week.

Previous winners of the World Food Prize and the current recipients have all been focused on hunger issues but those issues naturally go hand in hand with the overall depressed nature of economies. Specifically, the two Senators have experience in Native American issues and rural poverty. Mr. Miller and Mr. Yates saw the week as an opportunity to spend time with individuals and groups that are working on the same issues as the Harvest Initiative. While the focus of the week is on global issues, many participants are focused on domestic applications similar to the work of the Harvest Initiative, Inc.
